Amanda Pritchard, chief executive of NHS England, said a renewed recruitment campaign would also include 10,000 paid vaccinator roles. She said: “If you are able to help then please do apply. Your help can help us protect more people and save more lives.
“I am confident that with public support, the can-do spirit of the NHS will once again win through.”
The NHS will work with the Royal Voluntary Service and St John Ambulance again to train people to administer jabs or act as stewards.
Hundreds of hospitals already jabbing staff will be asked to vaccinate other health and care workers and eligible patients. Some 30 hospital hubs already offering public slots through the National Booking Service will be joined by dozens more. And GP surgeries and pharmacies – which Ms Pritchard said had “delivered the lion’s share” of Covid vaccinations so far – will be helped to go even further.
The amount they are paid for each standard jab delivered will increase from the current £12.58 to £15 until the end of January, rising to £20 on Sundays. For jabs delivered to vulnerable housebound patients during home visits, they will get a £30 premium.
There are now almost 3,000 vaccination sites in operation – double the number in February.
