Ramsay Hunt syndrome symptoms explained as Justin Bieber cancels tour
Justin Bieber is “taking a break” from touring as on Tuesday he announced that he’s cancelling the remainder of his Justice World Tour.
He wants to focus on his health, after opening up about being diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome earlier this year.
In a statement, Justin said: “Earlier this year, I went public about my battle with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, where my face was partly paralysed.
“As the result of this illness, I was not able to complete the North America leg of the Justice Tour.”
It is a rare disease, but one that can be debilitating in those that suffer from it.
What is Ramsay Hunt syndrome?
Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that typically affects people that are over the age of 60. Justin Bieber is 28.
The disorder causes a weakness in facial features or even paralysis of the face.
It occurs when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near one of your ears.
This take the form of a painful rash which has also been linked to hearing loss. It is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox.
What are the symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome?
There are two main symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome that you should be aware of.
First is a painful red rash that starts around one ear and has fluid-filled blisters across it.
The second is facial weakness or even paralysis which affects the same side of the face as the rash.
Some of the other symptoms can include:
- Ear pain
- Hearing loss
- Ringing in your ears (tinnitus)
- Difficulty closing one eye
- Spinning sensation or moving (vertigo)
- Change in taste perception or loss of taste
- Dry mouth and eyes
Why has Justin Bieber cancelled his tour?
Justin Bieber has cancelled his Justice World Tour due to his ongoing symptoms with Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
In a statement on Instagram, he said: “It took a real toll on me. This past weekend, I performed at Rock in Rio and I gave everything I have to the people in Brazil.
“After getting off stage, the exhaustion overtook me and I realised that I need to make my health the priority right now.
“So, I’m going to take a break from touring for the time being.”
He added: “I’ve been so proud to bring this show and our message of Justice to the world.
“Thank you for your prayers and support throughout all of this! I love you all passionately!”
No new tour dates have been confirmed.
