Dentist Dr. Hanna Kinsella told Express.co.uk the best toothbrush to choose to whiten teeth. She advised: “Use a sonic toothbrush.”

Dr. Hanna said: “Using a sonic electric toothbrush can provide a powerful dynamic cleaning action that helps to keep teeth and gums healthy by removing plaque.”

The brushes provide this “as well as effective stain removal which helps to brighten teeth and restore them to their natural whiteness,” the dentist said;

A sonic toothbrush, instead of rotating, vibrate and produce a hum.

They offer up to over 50,000 movements per minute.

How does a sonic toothbrush work?

The vibrations from the brush help to break up plaque and dirt and remove it from the teeth.

The brushes also drive water between the teeth and gum line when brushing to help clean.

Studies have found the brushes are good at reducing gum inflammation.

But it’s not just your toothbrush helping to whiten your teeth, products are important too.

Dr. Hanna explained the products to look for in your toothpaste to brighten teeth. 

She advised looking for hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide on the label of your toothpaste.

Dr. Hanna said: “Hydrogen peroxide is an active bleaching agent. It is a weak acid with strong oxidizing properties so it steals the electrons that hold the atoms together, causing the staining molecules to fall apart.

“Carbamide peroxide is another bleaching agent similar to hydrogen peroxide.”

Dr. Hanna suggested eating strawberries to naturally whiten teeth. 

“Strawberries contain malic acid which is actually a natural tooth whitener,” Dr. Hanna told Express.co.uk.

Malic acid is found in a number of fruits. It’s closely related to citric acid and Vitamin C and is also sometimes taken as a supplement.
