Husband left unable to have sex after penis gets savaged by flesh-eating bug

The wife of a cancer patient who was left unable to have sex after losing part of his penis to a flesh-eating superbug claims their relationship is “stronger than ever”.

Sue, 61, and Andrew Lane, 65, from Essex, were handed a six-figure payout after the hospital failed to remove his prostate gland in March 2013.

The operation failed after Andrew contracted a potentially fatal infection, necrotising fasciitis, which meant he lost most of his penis.

Despite this, Sue, who married Andrew months after he returned from the hospital, insists “sex life or not, our relationship is stronger than ever”.

Speaking to Take a Break magazine, Sue said that after Andrew lost most of his penis, he told her that he felt like “less of a man”.

She added: “I tried to help him see that sex wasn't the most important thing in a loving marriage, and that I would stand by him no matter what.”

Sue recalled the moment doctors told her they needed to cut away her husband’s infected flesh that spread from his stomach area down around his genitals.

It happened when Andrew was diagnosed with prostate cancer and decided to have an operation to have it removed. His bowel was punctured during the procedure, but staff at Southend Hospital only noticed the injury six days later.

He was rushed to the operation room, but the damage caused was so severe that he was left with just an inch-and-a-half of his penis.

Andrew was forced to have the contaminated tissue covering his stomach removed, which left him looking “nine months pregnant”. He spent the next eight weeks in hospital, and upon his return, Andrew tied the knot to Sue a few months later.

The cancer patient had been fitted with a catheter and a colostomy bag, which meant that he lost the physical side of his once “healthy” love life.

Now Andrew is unable to have sex, is incontinent and being treated for depression following the life-changing operation.

He said: “My wife Sue and I have been together for 18 years and enjoyed a healthy sex life, but since this happened that has been impossible.

“The desire is still there, but the little that's left just doesn't function anymore. It's been a difficult thing to come to terms with for both of us. I know Sue still loves me, but I do feel less of a man.”
