Fake Twitter Account Falsely Said Eli Lilly Was Giving Away Insulin

Eli Lilly is not giving away insulin, the drug company clarified on Thursday after a parody Twitter account falsely said the company would do just that.

The problem started when the parody Twitter account with the handle @EliLillyandCo posted Thursday morning that, “We are excited to announce that insulin is free now,” Forbes reported.

But @EliLillyandCo is not the Twitter handle for the real company.

“We apologize to those who have been served a misleading message from a fake Lilly account. Our official Twitter account is @LillyPad,” the company tweeted on Thursday afternoon.

The fake Eli Lilly post has now been labeled a parody profile, Forbes said.

Twitter’s new verification system appears to have played a role in the confusion.

The fake account carried a blue check mark, meaning it was verified through Twitter Blue, a new $7.99-per-month subscription service put in place days ago by new Twitter owner Elon Musk. The social networking site says Twitter Blue “elevates quality conversations on Twitter.” (Before Musk took over, Twitter awarded those check marks to journalists and other respected and real Twitter posters free of charge.)

The Indianapolis Star reported that later Thursday night that a second fake Eli Lilly account bearing a verification check mark posted misleading information.
