Although there isn’t a cure for type 2 diabetes, it’s seemingly more likely that a person can put the condition into remission – when blood sugar levels are in a normal range once more. How can this be achieved? The charity Diabetes UK highlights seven tell-tale signs of high blood sugar, which can affect adults and children alike. Firstly, an early symptom of type 2 diabetes is waking up during the night to urinate.

You may notice that you’re off to the loo more than you used to be, but it’s particularly more noticeable at night.

Secondly, it’s fairly common for a person with high blood sugar to feel extremely thirsty.

The classic eight glasses of water per day may not be refreshing to the diabetic, as they feel they could do with drinking more.

Thirdly, feelings of exhaustion may overwhelm you, as the condition can make people feel really tired.

As for the other four warning signs of type 2 diabetes, these include:

  • Losing weight without trying to
  • Genital itching or thrush
  • Cuts and wounds take longer to heal
  • Blurred eyesight

Delving into the details, losing weight without trying to consists of exercising and eating the same amount as you normally do but shedding the pounds.

As for genital itching or thrush, Lloyds Pharmacy advise people to visit their GP if they’ve had this symptom more than twice in the past six months.

The symptoms of thrush

Lloyds Pharmacy listed the difference of thrush symptoms in women and men.

For women, thrush symptoms include:

  • White vaginal discharge – this tends to be thick like cottage cheese but it doesn’t smell
  • Irritation and itching round the vagina
  • Soreness during sex or when you urinate
  • Swollen and red vaginal lips (labia)
  • Cracks in the skin around your genitals

For men, thrush symptoms include:

  • Thick white discharge from the penis
  • An unpleasant smell from the penis
  • Pulling back the foreskin may be difficult and painful
  • Irritation, redness and a burning sensation around the head of the penis as well as under the foreskin
  • Pain when urinating and during sex
  • Cuts and wounds

Cigna Healthcare said that minor scrapes “heal within three to seven days”.

“The larger and deeper the scrape, the longer it will take to heal,” it added.

If minor cuts take longer than a week to heal, then it may be a good idea to visit your GP.

Blurred eyesight

Vision Express defined blurred eyesight as “not seeing clearly”, even after rubbing your eyes.

Blurred eyesight is when you’re “unable to detect fine details of the object you’re looking at, regardless of its distance”.

An optometrist can help determine what is causing this vision difficulty.

Ignoring the early warning signs of diabetes can lead to vision loss, nerve damage and cancer, verified Diabetes UK.

Lifestyle interventions may be able to get a person to enter diabetes remission.

This can be achieved by losing weight; research demonstrated that an obese person losing 2st 5lb (15kg) in a safe, measured way, can be helpful.

Dropping the pounds can also help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
