Eczema treatment: £1 oil you must use before bed to protect against dry and itchy skin

Eczema is a long-term condition that causes the skin to become dry, itchy, red and cracked, according to the NHS. But, regularly using coconut oil before bed could be key to relieving your eczema symptoms, it’s been claimed.

Eczema is a very common condition that tends to come and go, dependent on the weather, and the health of your skin.

Young children are most at risk of developing eczema symptoms, but it could also develop in later life.

If you have eczema, your symptoms can vary between small patches of dry skin, to widespread, inflamed areas of cracked skin.

But you could protect against eczema symptoms by simply applying coconut oil to your skin, it’s been revealed.

Coconut oil is one of the best natural remedies for eczema symptoms.

It contains fatty acids that boost the skin’s overall moisture, which limits the risk of developing symptoms.

Applying coconut oil directly onto the skin everyday could improve your eczema within eight weeks, scientists have claimed.

It’s crucial that you apply the moisturiser after bathing and before bed.

“Coconut oil contains healthful fatty acids that can add moisture to the skin, which can help people with dry skin and eczema,” said medical website Medical News Today.

“Also, virgin coconut oil may protect the skin by helping combat inflammation and by improving the health of the skin barrier.

“Apply cold-pressed virgin coconut oil directly to the skin after bathing and up to several times a day. Use it before bed to keep the skin moisturised overnight.

“Extra-virgin coconut oil is generally solid at room temperature, but the warmth of a person’s body turns it to liquid. The oil is sold in health stores and online.”

But, you should avoid using coconut oil if you’re allergic to coconuts.

Instead, you could try using an aloe vera gel to relieve your eczema symptoms.

The gel is an antibacterial and antimicrobial treatment that lowers the risk of skin infections. People that often develop eczema are more at risk of developing these skin infections.

The gel also contains wound-healing properties that could relieve the pain of broken skin.
