Coronavirus is an infectious disease which has been confirmed in more than 1.4 million individuals across the world. But you could lower your risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms by simply maintaining a healthy, balanced diet, and by doing regular exercise, it’s been claimed.
Cases are continuing to rise in the UK, and the government has urged the public to stay at home, to avoid becoming infected or spreading the virus further.
People have been advised to remain indoors, as more than 55,000 UK individuals have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
Some patients can have coronavirus without even knowing it, as they may not have any signs of the disease.
But, some people develop severe symptoms which requires hospital treatment.
While there’s no way to make sure you don’t develop severe symptoms – which could lead to pneumonia – you can lower your risk.
Patients that are fit and healthy, and eat a balanced diet, are more likely to only have mild COVID-19 symptoms, according to former Buckingham Palace doctor, Dr Anna Hemming.
It’s still possible to be hospitalised with coronavirus if you are a healthy individual, but it’s less likely.
If you think you may have coronavirus, you should avoid going straight to hospital, as beds are being reserved for only the most critical cases.

“We have now been living with social restrictions for two weeks and coronavirus awareness since February,” Dr Hemming told Hello! magazine.
“We know some people breeze through infection while others don’t even realise they have it.
“There is no guarantee which group you may fall into when you get the virus, however it is well documented that more who are fit and healthy, exercise and have a good balanced diet recover quicker.
“This is also not the case for everyone, and I know several fit healthy and super sporty young people currently in hospital on ventilators struggling to pull through.”

It’s recommended that everyone tries to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
Regular exercise is key, and the public is advised to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week.
The most common coronavirus symptoms include having a very high fever, or developing a new, continuous cough.
Anybody that feels hot to the touch on their chest or back could be showing early coronavirus symptoms.

Similarly, anyone that’s been coughing more than usual for longer than a one-hour period, or if they’ve had at least three coughing episodes every 24 hours, should self-isolate.
Everyone has been told to remain at home to avoid spreading the infection.
You should only leave your home to go food or medicine shopping, for medical help, traveling to and from work – where absolutely necessary – and for one form of exercise every day.
More than 55,000 people in the UK have tested positive for coronavirus, according to latest government figures, of which 6,159 have died.
