Arthritis affects around 10 million people in the UK, according to the NHS. If you’ve been diagnosed with the condition, or even simply have painful joints, you could benefit from making a bone broth remedy, which has numerous health benefits, it’s been claimed.

Arthritis can affect people of all ages, including young children.

The most common types of arthritis to be diagnosed in the UK are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is caused by the smooth cartilage that lines the joints becoming increasingly worn down.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune condition, whereby the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints.

Whichever type of arthritis you have, you may benefit from regularly eating bone broth, a nutritionist has revealed.

It’s one of the best natural sources of collagen, which is the protein that’s found in bones and skin.

But crucially, it’s also the protein that makes up cartilage, according to nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.

The collagen in bone broth is readily absorbable, and subsequently helps to restore cartilage, he claimed.

“One of the most valuable components of bone broth stock is gelatin,” he wrote on his website.

“Gelatin acts like a soft cushion between bones that helps them ‘glide’ without friction.

“It also provides us with building blocks that are needed to form and maintain strong bones.

“This helps take pressure off of ageing joints and supports healthy bone mineral density.”

How to make bone broth

If you decide to make bone broth yourself, all you’ll need are some animal bones (chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, fish), some apple cider vinegar, water and vegetables.

Firstly, place all of your animal bones into a large pan or slow cooker, and cover them with water.

Add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the mixture, which helps to draw out the nutrients.

Heat through the broth slowly until it starts to boil, and then reduce the heat to a simmer.

Leave the broth for around six hours, getting rid of any scum on the top, as and when it crops up.

The longer you leave the bone broth, the better. Chicken bones can be cooked for an entire day, while beef can be left for 48 hours.

Add in your vegetables before serving, to make a lunch-sized portion.

The best additions to your broth include onions, garlic, carrots and celery.
