High blood pressure: One drink shown to reduce the risk of hypertension and lower readings

Hypertension is the ultimate stealth condition, with many people not knowing they have it without having their blood pressure measured — or until high blood pressure begins to damage vital organs. A person’s diet is key and when it comes to a drink helping to lower blood pressure, a smoothie made with the following ingredients could help.

Berries

Berries have been proven to be beneficial to blood pressure.

Their polyphenol content is what’s been found to be good for the heart.

Studies have shown that those who consumed berries and polyphenol-rich foods in their daily diet experienced improved markers of heart disease risk and helped lower their blood pressure.

Bananas

Bananas contain plenty of potassium, a mineral that plays a vital role in managing hypertension, said Medical News Today.

It continued: “One medium-sized banana contains around 422 milligrams of potassium.

“According to the American Heart Association, potassium reduces the effects of sodium and alleviates tension in the walls of the blood vessels.

“Adults should aim to consume 4,700 milligrams (mg) of potassium daily.”

Leafy greens

Numerous studies investigating the blood-pressure lowering effects of eating vegetables found that leafy, green vegetables help to reduce high blood pressure by easing arterial stiffness.

The study, published in the journal Clinical Nutrition Research, attributed the blood-pressure lowering effect to dietary nitrate, a compound found in the leafy, green vegetable.

Leafy green vegetables include kale, spinach, cabbage and Romaine lettuce.

Almonds

Almonds are rich in healthy fats, fibre, protein, magnesium and vitamin E.

Leading health experts suggest that almonds can help with one’s health in a number of ways including reducing blood pressure, lowering blood sugar levels and lowering cholesterol levels.

Almonds are also known to help reduce hunger and promote weight loss.

Blood pressure can be tested by your GP or using a special medical device you can buy and keep at home.

When testing, blood pressure should be measured in both arms to get the best reading.

The NHS advised adults over the age of 40 should have their blood pressure checked at least once every five years.

Causes of high blood pressure include a diet high in salt, being overweight and a lack of exercise.
